After almost 4 summers of not using the cherries on my 3 trees, you can imagine how excited I am to come across your site. My 8 year old son matthew loves the cherries straight from the tree. i would like to bottle a sauce and sell them, any ideas? I live in Surrey, BC Canada. i never knew we had such a rare treasure in our own backyard! thanks for your help and what a neat site.

*cries* I miss sour cherries so much. I can't get them here in Southern California. Not fresh anyway.

When I was a child my grandfather had a tree and I adored it. I would shimy up it and eat the cherries right then and there. No restraint. And when the tree was just comming out of its winter sleep and the sap started running, I would strip the clear slightly bitter sap and eat it like chewing gum.

There is nothing about sour cherries that I don't like.

Those look stunning! I am so jealous.

I was a child like that! We didn't have a sour cherry tree, so I would steal into the neighbor's yard to pick his cherries, as naughty as the birds, then wipe my fingers on my red hair to hide my theft. Finally, my mother planted a Montmorency cherry tree for me, and I was happy. I had to replace it some years later, and the replacement tree bore even better. To my astonishment, while I was diligently picking away one day, a neighbor child came up to me and said, "You can't eat those". I raised an eyebrow and said, "Well, you can't, but it's my tree, so I can eat all I want." She persisted. "My mommy says they're poisonous." I put my hands akimbo and told her, "Kid, your mom's full of it. These are pie cherries. I planted this tree myself. Just because she doesn't know the fruit doesn't mean it's poison." Later that year, I met a man of 40 who had never tasted a fresh Bing cherry. People live in produce ignorance!

I enjoyed the parts about your Grandfather giving you your own cherry tree, your dog, Mrs. Welch, and your Grandfather giving you a net for the tree. It would have been such a lovely story without the cursing though. Maybe some Muttley or ascii cursing could have expressed your anger and frustration at the birds?
