World Vegetarian is a great book, indeed--it is one that I gave to my father-in-law, who has very few cookbooks at his home, due to lack of space, but it is one of the handful he keeps out for use and uses frequently.

Meg--it depends on what sort of cooking you want to do. But, stay tuned, you gave me an idea for a post on my favorite "Baker's Dozen" cookbooks--they might get you started.

But do let me know what you are wanting to cook--that makes it easier. I don't much love "general" cookbooks, so I don't have many that I use, read and keep...with a few exceptions.

Okay, Barbara, you've convinced me: I need to get some more cookbooks. Which one(s) would you suggest I start with??

I had The World Vegetarian, until my vegetarian daughter talked me out of it and took it home with her.

I have the World Vegetarian book, and my library has World of the East Vegetarian Cooking (there doesn't seem to be as much overlap as one would think). I haven't cooked much out of the latter yet, but the former has served me well indeed.

I have a couple Madhur Jaffrey cookbooks, but my favorite by far is her "World Vegetarian" cookbook - it has so many intriguing recipes and tastes that I'd never come across in other cookbooks. Based on your recommendation, I'll have to look for this one - I really enjoy cookbooks that include some history or stories, and I've wondered how the term 'curry' came to be used in so many places!
