Another thing is that the foods they refuse are normally eaten by most of the population. My family has taught me to eat what is offered to you. There are exceptions, of course, such as dog meat and alcohol. I easily get intoxicated. But wine I won't refuse, but 1 or 2 glasses only. Accepting and eating the food offered is a sign of humility and acceptance of hospitality. People might think you're too high and mighty to commune with them.
