You're completely wrong that eating local is only for middle and upper classes. Most of our customers are average people - some even use milk tokens. Eating local food is cheaper. Plus since when has food been about value only - isn't it about what you value?

I agree, Erika--I think it is great to see it getting more exposure in the mainstream media.

The only way to eat locally all year around in the frozen Midwest is to plan ahead and can or freeze--and not everyone has the time, will or skills to do it.

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

I can't wait to plant my herbs and tomatoes....

I read that article in TIME today, and I think he probably gave a lot to think about to people who don't often think about their food. I appreciated his debate and going back and forth on the pros and cons of eating locally. I would love to eat locally, but here in the frozen Northern Midwest, our growing season is from June to October if we're lucky. The rest of the year we would be stuck eating meat and diary only if we stuck with eating locally. Not very health-conscious.

While we support local while we can, it's not the answer for everyone all the time, and I appreciated his commenting on that.

I'd go for locally produced food. You can buy them fresh from the garden. And there's nothing like eating fresh food.

There is nothing better than something fresh from a garden. I can't wait to have fresh tomatoes again and not those pale immitations in the grocery store. Apples too-love them crunchy and juicy.
