Weekend Kat Blogging: Kitties and Kat

When my mother was pregnant with me, she had a Siamese cat named Missy who was very possessive with my Mom. When my Dad came to live with her, Missy didn’t like him at all, and was very jealous. Mom’s friends told her that when I was born, she would have to give up Missy, because she would never accept me and would hurt me.

Mom refused to have anything to do with that. She later told me that when she brought me home from the hospital, she put me in the crib, picked up Missy and put her in the crib with me and waited to see what she would do.

Apparently, Missy sniffed me, purred, curled around me and washed the top of my head.

Ever after that, so the family story goes, Missy slept with me in my crib and would let no one but Mom or Dad pick me up. If anyone else approached the crib, she would growl fiercely and bare her teeth.

None of our cats are protective with Kat the way Missy was with me, but many of them are her friends.

Particularly, Schmoo, the big white cat who she is petting in the picture above. He adores her, and when she is in my lap nursing, he crawls up in my lap and curls around her, purring. He lets her pet him, sinking her fingers and toes into his thick, rabbit-like fur. Even when she clumsily pulls his ear, he just purrs louder.

Grimalkin and Gummitch both love to sleep next to her as well, and Tatterdemalion flirts outrageously with her. Dandelion watches over her obsessively, and complains by loudly miaowing if Kat cries too long.

Kat loves to watch the kitties run and play; when they dance around the room and climb up their cat tree, she giggles and laughs.

It is really cute to see her grow up with so many feline friends.

  1. i think it’s cute you have a cat named schmoo. that’s my boyfriend’s pet name :) don’t tell him i told you, should you ever meet him at some function. also, i’m pretty sure there is a serious cat addiction gene in our family.

  2. I promise to keep your secret, Ashley!

As I recall, I took many very cute pictures of you as a baby with your grandmother and grandfather’s old cat, Morris. The two of you were adorable together.

Yes, the love for cats does seem to run significantly in our family. Between the two of us, our mothers and grandmothers, and aunts, we are a whole bunch of crazy cat ladies, for sure.

  3. Too cute, i did kid and cat blogging today as well. I love Kat’s leggings! Adorable. Hemingway used to leave his cat to babysit his baby in Paris. Our grandmother was also worried about our cat and baby together, but we dont have any problems at all.

    Blessings!

  4. When my eldest was born, we had a cat named Sammy that was very protective. One of our friends came to see the baby, and Sammy planted all four feet in the hall, arched up and HISSED at him and wouldn’t let him through to the baby’s room. It was insanely cute.

  6. Thank you, Riana–those are called Babylegs–look them up on Google. Great little legwarmers for kids that protect and warm the legs without covering the diaper area. It makes changing a snap and protects Kat’s little knees now that she is working on the crawling thing. Plus, they are cute as all get out!

I didn’t know that about Papa Hemingway. Cool!

Donna–that is just too adorable about Sammy!

Indefatigable–you are absolutely right. She thought I was just a big, naked, ungainly, but lovable kitten, and treated me as such until I was in college!
