Holiday Weekend Kat Blogging: She Stands, She Talks, and Her Garden Grows!

There is much news to catch up on with Kat.

First of all, she is starting to stand quite well. Sure, she still leans on furniture or lightly holds our hands, but her balance is remarkable. She is also close to pulling herself up on her feet by herself.

On the other hand, she still shows little interest in crawling, and in fact, seems to hate the entire concept of it. I have a feeling she is going to try and walk before she crawls. (Which among children is not unheard of–Morganna in fact, tried to walk first, but ended up crawling instead anyway, because her little legs were just not strong enough to walk yet. Which irritated her greatly, let me tell you, so she only really crawled for a couple of months, before she was up and cruising against the furniture, then toddling about. I have a feeling it runs in the family–Kat is acting the same way.)

And, yesterday, Kat looked right at me, and said, “Amma. Mamam. Mama.” More than once. Lots. In fact, when she woke up as Zak was carrying her up to bed with us, she started calling for me, crying over and over, “Amma, Mama, Amma!”

This morning, when she woke up, she turned and looked at me and said, “Mama.”

Morganna will be so excited, because she is the one who has been working on helping Kat walk, and in listening to her babble, and babbling with her, predicted, “She will be talking soon. Like in a couple of weeks soon.” She will be happy to have been right.

In other news, the flower garden we are planting in our fenced in side yard that used to be where our dogs lived, is coming along. We mean for it to be Kat’s place to play, explore and learn about the world of plants and wildlife, so we think of it as her garden. Currently, we have planted eight roses; half of them climbing roses that we are training unto a graceful, scrolled iron trellis we have installed against the wooden fence. Perennials, such as purple and blue flowered meadow sage, silvery artemisia, lavender, echinacea, monarda and dianthus, many of which are fragrant, are to be combined annuals such as verbena and alyssum in the stone-sided raised beds.

The first climbing rose, Fiesta, has bloomed, as you can see above.

Next year, and in years to come, Kat will be able to play in her garden and help plant and grow her own herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruits. It is all so exciting!

Look for more gardening news later in the week, when I feature a look at the herbs and vegetables I have planted on our deck again this year.

  2. she is as beautiful as the rose.

(data point: I walked before I crawled. Not uncommon with girls, so I hear. Center of balance and all that.)

  3. As always, the baby is more beautiful than the rose.
(even though the rose is beautiful)

I’ll be eagerly looking forward to plants blogging.

*sigh* we can only grow tough feral roses here and it’s just lilac season now.

  4. My boys both walked at 9 months, so only crawled for about three months.

Now they barely move away from their computers…

  5. I’ve been reading your food blog (if that’s what its called) for a while now, and I’ve found your articles very interesting and insightful. I’m keen to try some of the recipes you’ve put up soon (since I’ve been baking a whole lot. Yay cupcakes!)

I have to admit, I actually don’t like babies, but after reading all about Kat, I’m starting to think that maybe they’re not that bad- as long as there’s cats around. I love cats!
