Weekend Kat Blogging: Musical Girl Growing

I think that our friend Karen’s dream was a premonition.

You see, when Kat was only about two months old, Karen dreamed that she and I and Kat were walking in the woods somewhere, and Kat was a little girl around three or four years old. In the dream, I started singing, and Karen said that Kat started singing a descant to the melody in the purest, sweetest, bell-like voice.

When Karen told me about her dream, Kat was still a quiet baby, content to lay in our arms, and sleep a lot. Now, she is an active nine month old who says “Mamma,” “Dadda” and stands up and clambers about. (She took her first supported steps yesterday, by the way: while she held onto my fingers, she stood herself up and walked for about a foot and a half. She was insanely proud of herself!)

In and among all of this vocalization and clambering about, she has developed a fascination with music, musical instruments and singing. When Morganna and I sing, she sings with us–her voice sliding along until she matches pitch with us.

And when Zak plays guitar, she wants in on the action, and plays with him. As you can see from the photos, she is very fascinated with Zak’s newest guitar, and every time she sees it, she wants him to pick it up and let her play it with him. She loves hearing him play and recognizes the sound of his playing, distinguishing it from the sound of our CD’s.

She loves to dance to music as well, whether she is dancing with one of us, or is being supported, standing and dances on her own. Music, like food, makes her smile and laugh with joy, and is becoming a major part of her life.

Our friend Tom says that she is destined to have a wok in one hand and a guitar in the other.

Speaking of eating, she has successfully taken to yogurt, raita, rhubarb, strawberries, melons, beef broth, tofu (as Ma Po Tofu), pork, cheese, spinach, collards, green beans (as Sichuan green beans), chicken, baba ganoush, hummus, mangoes and pasta.

So far, the only things she seems to dislike are grape leaf rolls and olives.

Other than that, she loves it all.

  1. Gaaaah! Too cute. How could she be you and Zak’s and NOT love music? I see the red hair is still coming in full force.

  3. Kat is so cute. Wait she is a little bit older and discovers that black olives fit over the fingers so nicely…and she will want one on each finger. By then they taste good because of the fun.

  4. She gets more adorable by the day - and now, she’s not only a budding gourmet but a musician as well. I love reading about your little bundle of joy and love that you share the love with us.
