Interesting topic. I found you guys while researching raising backyard chickens and your blog came up. I am not sure how to find out what bee keeping laws are in my area. I suppose the city gov office would know?

A community garden in metro Atlanta (http://www.oakhurstgarden.org/) offers classes periodically on beekeeping and raising chickens. And I know a CSA in the metro area has a beehive as well.

I'm mostly over my childhood terror of bees (though they STILL unnerve me a little), but I wouldn't inflict that same terror on a new generation. Something does need to be done about CCD, though; glad some enterprising folks are doing it.

I've thought about it off and on again. I live in an area that would support them quite nicely (someone used to keep bees in the field next to my house a few decades ago, and not much has changed, except a nursery was opened next door. So I would think that would be a good change). Hubby's dad had loaner hives in his crops, so my hubby has a bit of experience being around them.

But, like Kitt commented, we have a lot of natural hives in our city. Every few months it seems there's a house full of bees on the news.

Also, many are becoming Africanized here slowly but surely it seems. We had a very small hive in our temporary water pipes during major construction of the neighborhood. Hubby thought they might have been Africanized because they chased him too far when he mowed.

Then they left, or so we thought. The neighbors later found their owl house had been taken over. So, I'm still a bit nervous about trying to learn beekeeping. Maybe if I lived in a more rural area so the hives could be put far away from activity, I'd look into it more seriously.

It's a tempting thought, having your own hive, isn't it? But Im pretty sure my neighbors would object.

As it is, there are tons of bees in my Denver neighborhood; they don't seem to lack for nectar sources. The lindens just bloomed and every tree was vibrating.

When a neighbor's tree blew down, there was a colony inside. I got some neat photos of that. Felt sorry for the bees, though.

Thanks for all the interesting info and links!
