I am not from Ohio and yet I came to the same conclusion. The perfect 1st birthday party is a baby, a diaper, a cake, and a large vessel of water. Our Critter, for reasons too complicated to get into, had two birthday parties. I can report from hard experience that chocolate icing makes for a much more photogenic experience than white icing.

My family (who comes from rural Ohio, so maybe it is that area?) also has this tradition of babies getting their own cake on their first birthday, and it is indeed a wonderful tradition. I am glad to hear someone else does it! My eldest made a fine mess and I am expecting her baby sister to do so also this October. I hope my eldest (who is much younger than Morganna) is as patient and wonderful as Morganna is with her sister!
