Nancy: The Oakland Farmer's market is a short walk from the 12th Street BART! It's at 9th and Broadway in Old Oakland - near Oakland Chinatown.

Sorry to hi-jack Barbara's journal but thanks to Tammy for the info on the San Leandor Farmer's Market; as long as I can reach it by BART (I don't have a car), I'm going to try it out. Diane - I would love to go to the Oakland Market but alas, no car. And now, I'm off to the Civic Center Farmer's Market which can be quite variable in quality (if not quantity).
Again - apologies to Barbara for all the non- Athens related posts.

From a local Athens girl (by marriage) to all you Bay Areas folks - I grew up across the bay in San Leandro, and there is a pretty kick ass farmers' market (used to be at the library, but now seems to be at Bayfair Mall - right off the Bart stop). Follow this URL for more info:
http://www.localharvest.org/farmers-markets/M9073
I know SL is off the beaten path for most folks, but if you dare to venture across to East Bay it may be worth it (It's way more blue collar/working class than Berkeley or SF)

Cheers!

Nancy: My favorite of all favorite farmers markets here in SF is the Friday AM Oakland Farmers Market. Of course being Friday, it's kind of a pain to get to if you work a normal sort of gig (I work from home, so sometimes get there).

It has an AMAZING selection of Asian vegetables and is a proper working (and working-class) market. Fresh dates - half the price of the expensive Saturday Berkeley market. A HUGE bunch of Thai basil...fifty cents. They have some nice prepared food. Not so good on the meats, cheeses, etc, but Housewives Market is right there with a huge meat selection (not sure of the source of all their meat though). The market has fewer organics, but most of the farmers are small-time Hmong farmers, and use fewer chemicals than the big farms. Many of them raise their stuff with low or no pesticides, but don't find it economical to certify as organic.

Barbara: Sorry for hijacking your lovely Ohio post with SF Info!
