Mom or Uncle Jim, George or John could have just yelled and waved a stick and Babe (that was the cow’s name) would have known not to mess with them and would have gone right in.

He was really upset, too–because he had aimed quite carefully to whack her in the shoulder, but she moved.

Which, of course, is the difference between hitting a baseball and a living critter.
