Weekend Kat Blogging: The Little Spring Flautist, Artist and Inventor

Kat loves to not only hear her Daddy play Native American flute, she likes to imitate him. For months, she has been able to blow a clear note on a flute if it is held for her. Now, she can hold the flute herself, and when she is holding a small flute, she can reach down and even finger a different note–meaning she can cover the finger hole of a small flute with small holes!

This flute is too big for her to do that, but she really likes it because of the black cat block on it–and it has a really nice tone, and even though it is large, it doesn’t take a lot of breath to make a good clear note.

She had a great time playing flute with her Daddy Sunday morning, before we went out for a long walk–it was beautiful outside, sunny, warm, with flowers blooming. The restaurant was closed, so I was off work–it was perfect.

So out we went–with Kat dressed in her new spring colors gifted to her by Grandma Tessa. (Thank you, Grandma Tessa!)

Then, we came back home and grilled bratwursts for supper, which we ate with sauerkraut and asparagus. It was almost a traditional German supper, although the beer, instead of being a beverage, was cooked in the kraut.

Kat didn’t think much about the kraut, though, so instead, she got to eat leftovers from last night’s dinner–Keema Mattar Gobi, (Minced Spiced Lamb with Peas and Cauliflower–yes, a recipe will come along soon), served over rice. Sauerkraut is an acquired taste, I will admit. She didn’t care much for the asparagus, either, but it wasn’t the best I have ever had It was rather bland. We’ll see what she thinks of the local spears when they come in!

After supper, Kat got ready for bed in her new lilac-colored sleeper with the little bunnies and flowers sprinkled all over it, and I got out her crayons and paper for some quiet creative playtime. She loves her crayons. She has Daddy, Morganna and myself draw pictures for her, and then she practices copying our motions. She is getting the idea of circles pretty well now.

As you can see from the photograph, Kat has invented a novel place to store her crayons while she is using them.

She has discovered the wonder that is pockets, but unfortunately, any fold or opening in fabric or clothing is a pocket as far as she concerned. With a snap-front sleeper, she will cram so many crayons into the leg openings that she can no longer bend at the knee! Silly girl! But she is hilarious–she will take out a color, use it for a bit, and then tuck it away, then pick out a new color from her new hiding place, and work with it for a while, before repeating the entire process.

Right now she is dozing on my lap, while Morganna and I catch up on the latest Dr. Who and Torchwood episodes.

Look for some posts on reducing restaurant food waste as well as some more recipes in the coming week! I meant to write more this weekend, but the restaurant was so busy–we had record-smashing business on Friday and Saturday was quite busy, too–that I didn’t get a chance to get around to it!

  1. Your child is so entrancing, I love to watch her development.

I don’t know how you can tear yourself away from her to go to work!

I wonder what instrument she will eventually choose for herself?

  3. I LOVE sauerkraut!
It’s fun to watch you expose Kat to music, art, colors, textures, smells and tastes. Maybe “painting” with water on the patio this summer. My kids loved that. Take care!

  4. She looks so sweet.
I love the place were she is keeping her crayons.
When my daughter was 3 years and when hubby playes his violin, she used to cry and cry sayinf stop that noise, she coudn’t stand that hubby could play and she coudn’t play as her dad.
Now she is 15 and she has been playing violin for years and she loves it and sometimes we make fun of her saying how she behaved.
