I don't think I've ever had it explained to me so eloquently.  Thank you.  I've never seen Gordon Ramsey's shows, BBC or American, I'd just assumed it was more of the schadenfreude being served up by the current network execs.  I may have to check out his BBC episodes on youtube.</description>

					<description>I believe that shows like Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares (the American versions) are not made for people that are professional cooks, they are made for the American/Canadian public that enjoys watching Jerry Springer, because with all the white-trash language and behavior going on, on these &quot;cooking&quot; shows, the food and the love gets lost and the  Jerry Springer drama is the only thing that remains. Thank god for PBS!!!</description>

					<description>People always swore a lot in the restaurants I've worked in, but they always apologized to me when they did. I don't think I'd ever told them I hated profanity, but for some reason they seemed to expect something more out of themselves  around me. It was very sweet. I always enjoyed working with the chefs in the restaurants I was in.</description>

					<description>Foul language, in and of itself, is fine. But bigotry is unacceptable. And that's what a lot of this actually is.

As for Ramsay, it's clear that he has been coached to eliminate certain insults from his tv show while allowing others, but even many of the the insults that they allowed are still bigoted. The blame for this falls not only on him but on the tv producers who have obviously decided that some forms of bigotry are ok for tv.

Casually racist language is commonplace in many kitchens. Turning a blind eye to racism (as both employers and employees may be pressured to do) is not tough or strong or evidence of a thick skin. It is cowardly and weak.

(Btw, it doesn't matter if the people saying racist things really believe what they're saying or if they are just saying those things to be provocative. It is still racism and racism is never trivial.)</description>
