I'm kind of a typical American, and I loved vegies even when I was little - my Mom was one of the first few on the health-food bandwagon of the early 1970's and we always had lots of veg in our house (along with some of the more dubious and best-forgotten food fads of that time - brewer's yeast...ergh!). I now cook lots of Indian food as it is so wonderfully varied when it comes to cooking vegetables, and find it an ongoing source of inspiration.

This looks really tasty, and I think I'll make it tomorrow with zucchini from my garden, and little eggplants from the farmer's market.

Sweta--it is weird, isn't it?

Now, I grew up loving vegetables, and in many cases, preferring them to meat. I was also in the minority among my peers. In fact, I was held up as an example to many of my cousins who would not touch vegetables.

Part of American kids' dislike of vegetables stems from the fact that most Americans cook vegetables poorly. I know that my Mom did--which is part of why I tended to eat my vegetables raw! American kids also used to be confronted with limp, mushy canned vegetables which are really sad things in many cases.

Whereas you Indian kids got vegetables cooked in amazingly tasty ways! Kat is lucky in that she is getting the best vegetables of many worlds--though she is going through a toddler phase of mistrusting anything that is green except basil. She will grow out of it I am sure.

As a kid I would always wonder why kids in the "West" hated eating vegetables-I never found anything wrong with it!! It was also surprising that there was a comic character to encourage kids to eat "spinach" (we loved our "palak" with or without the paneer)!! Infact,we would have meatless Mondays on most days of the week :)

I bought them already split, skinned and roasted--they often labeled as Channa dalia or bhuna chana.

They are tasty little fellows--I love them.

Did you roast the black chickpeas and make the pappulu (the pappulu that is used to make the pappula podi) yourself or did you buy it?
