I diligently went out and bought the raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries to make a lovely berry crisp. Alas, the berries didn't make it in the house long enough for this to be prepared. ALL the berries - every last one - were gobbled up within minutes of being brought into the house. Sigh! I'll try again soon.

"I love fruit, and prefer fruity desserts to chocolaty ones any day"

Aha! I'm not the only crazy person in the world after all! I really love my chocolate desserts, which means that my love for fruit desserts is quite extreme, because given the choice I'd take the dessert.

"Kat helped with this dessert–and if you have an older child, like a nine or ten year old, they could probably make this dish all by themselves, with you only helping to put the pan into the oven and take it out when it is done."

I love that you cook with her and let her do so much. I also think that if you cook a lot with your kids when they're that age and growing up, you won't even have to supervise the oven usage when they're 9 or 10. My siblings and I were making bread and cookies and muffins by ourselves by that age.

Meg--when I massaged the butter into the dough, it was with the idea that the dough would then turn into more of a crisp cookie than get soggy from being crumbly.

And it worked.

Also, the glass baking pan makes the bottom crust crisp up.

Christian--don't use too much--just a little, and it really enhances the berry flavor.

Wild blackberries are the best--there are several farmers here who sell them.

Barbara, I'm also intrigued by the bottom layer of crisp. Did it actually crisp up, or was it stodgy? I would have thought that the juices from the fruit would make the texture soft and lumpy.

You've reminded me that I don't bake often enough with my four year old, let alone the two year old. Time to get blackberry picking I think!
