First Picture of Kat

Hello, everyone.

This is Kat, in the hospital in Columbus, getting treatments to make her lungs stronger, and her breathing better.

No pictures of me yet, however!

I am going up to Columbus tonight to be with her; Zak came and brought Morganna back so she could go to school tomorrow, and is picking me up and heading back out this evening.

We’ll stay up there as long as it takes.

Until then, Tigers and Strawberries will be quiet–go to visit Habeas Brulee and see what the next Spice is Right challenge will be–and when I can get to it–I will post the roundup for challenge six here. But, right now, I have been concentrating on healing myself and making colustrum and milk for Kat, and tomorrow, I will be concentrating on holding her and loving her.

I figure you all understand.

Thank you for all of the positive comments and energy–it has meant a great deal.

  9. […] Barbara of Tigers & Strawberries created one of my favorite food blog events, The Spice is Right. Every month, she sets a challenge with a spice-related theme. Since she just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Kat, she doesn’t have time right now to run the event. I couldn’t bear the thought of it losing momentum or disappearing, so I offered to host it instead for October and November to give her a chance to recover. […]

  13. Looks like the picture of my daughter at that point. Makes me look back 11 years and say “Boy, she’s as tall as me and half as mean as me now. What happened?”

Good luck to the four of you. I’ve done it, you can too!

Can’t wait for more info on what I am cooking and how she is being mom!

  17. Beautiful 🙂
And you know you can fuel-up on your chicken stock, so you’ll heal fast and Kat will start off with the best raw ingredients for the milk you’re making 😉

  22. Hello all, Dan here.

Hopefully folks find this buried in here, as I can’t post directly to blog. I didn’t see a laptop among the things they were frantically packing when Zak got back to Athens yesterday, so I don’t know when Barbara will be posting any updates.

Anyway, Heather, (my wife,) and I helped ferry Barb and Zak to Columbus last night. Zak was really tired, and although he insisted he’d be fine to drive, I didn’t want them taking any chances, (plus it gave us a chance to see the baby.)

She’s off the oxygen, but it still having difficulty swallowing on her own, so the feeding tube in still there. She’s looking a lot healthier and stronger than she does in the picture, and was fairly active while they were feeding her around 8 PM last night.

The Doctors were saying then that they might keep her in the hospital for up to a month, but NONE of us see that happening, (including most of the nurses who are with her round the clock.)

So, right now, Mom, Dad, the Baby, and big sis are all doing great. Just wanted to let folks know. We’ll keep you posted!

    -Dan

  29. I just want all of you to know that I so empathize with the problems following beautiful Kat’s entry into our world. When my son was born prematurely he was in a separate nursery at New York Hospital and because there was an outbreak of staph in the general hospital nobody was allowwd behind those glass walls. I could only look through — not touch him, never mind breastfeed him. I was disconsolate until we were able to bring him home with us.

This week he is onstage in San Francisco in Stoppard’s Travesties — and he has a beautiful teenaged daughter and a strapping six-year-old son of his own. But I can still feel the anxiety and need for support I experienced when he was such a tiny infant. I send you lots of good thoughts and wish you the very best. I know everything will be okay.

  37. I take a couple of days off and look what happens:) She is beautiful! Thanks Dan for the update. Barbara I wish you, Zak, Marganna and little Kat all the best. The way I look at it is this – you wrote so much about what you were going to feed her she couldn’t wait to make an appearance. She knows there are some good eats in her future.

  38. i don’t read any blogs for a few days and then look what happens. I missed it. I am sitting here balling my eyes out now. I don’t know why, for lots of different reasons I expect, the most important of which is happiness for you and your family. Take care, Barbara,

  39. Hello, everyone!

Thank you all for the positive comments and the “net-Love”–it means a great deal. I feel very bouyed up by a cloud of well-wishes and kindness right now. Thank you, thank you, thank you–again and again. I can probably not say it enough.

Dan–especially–thank you for updating for us–that was a big help. It wasn’t until today that we had wireless Internet, a laptop and a moment to sit still all long enough to visit T&S and give folks the report.

I’ll go ahead and give an update above for folks who don’t read comments–there are more and better pictures to come, probably later tonight. For now, though–thank you all once again, now and forever, for the love and support. It means a great deal to us all.

  40. Barabara! Congratulations on your new little blessing. I was born at 34 weeks and was in the NICU for 10 days because of lung problems, too. I turned out just fine! I think your little one is beautiful and will blossom as she grows!

  41. Very glad to hear that Kat is getting better, it must be a great relief to you (a banal thing to say, but we’re expecting our first one to arrive soon and I find myself being constantly worried with the thought “if only child is healthy and okay”; a real grey-hair-generator if there ever was one…) Congratulations, best wishes and all such things to you and your family!
